The research area of Professor Andreas Nitsche is the development of diagnostic tools for detecting highly pathogenic viruses, imported and new viruses, the development of approaches to the identification and characterization of new viruses, including NGS methods, fundamental research of highly pathogenic viruses in order to improve therapy and prevention, and to clarify the mechanisms of pathogenesis. He is one of the most experienced scientists with special knowledge in the field of molecular diagnostics of viruses.

He heads the center for Biosafety 1 "highly Pathogenic viruses" of the Robert Koch Institute. He directs the German reference laboratory for poxviruses and the RKI center for DNA sequencing.
